Zintle Mpupha and Libbie Janse van Rensburg scored sensational long-range tries to help the the Springbok Women launch a comeback against Wales in November, both of which have been nominated for the 2021 SA Rugby Try of the Year award.
Nomination 9: Zintle Mpupha vs Wales
Coming off a crushing 46-3 defeat by France the previous week, the Bok Women produced an improved performance as they ran Wales ragged in Cardiff before they ultimately slumped to a 29-19 defeat.
Trailing 29-7 midway through the second half, outside centre Zintle Mpupha dotted down under the poles to finish off a delightful team try. In a sweeping move originating inside their own 22, some industrious running followed by a linebreak by wing Nadine Roos had South Africa exiting the danger zone with a series offloads before the final ball released Mpupha to score.
Nomination 10: Libbie Janse van Rensburg vs Wales
Buoyed by their earlier effort, the Bok Women were high in confidence as they looked to mount a sensational comeback. With the score at 29-14, they scored another wonderful try from deep inside their own half to make it a 10-point game.
From a ruck right on the 10-metre line, scrumhalf Unam Tose threw a bullet pass to flyhalf Zenay Jordaan, who in turn shifted the ball to replacement back Libbie Janse van Rensburg.
The last try of the match was another beauty for South Africa, with Libbie Janse van Rensburg running 40m to score near the end and cut the lead back to 10 points. Spotting a gaping hole in the defence, she ran on to the ball at pace and expertly rounded the Wales replacement wing before handing off the cover defender to finish off her try from 40m out.
