Lukhanyo Am produced a sensational offload to help set Damian de Allende up for a touchdown against the All Blacks, one of 10 nominees for the 2021 SA Rugby Try of the Year award.
Nominee 5: Aphelele Fassi vs Argentina
Playing in their first Rugby Championship match since 2019, the Springboks named a rotated side after a tough series against the British & Irish Lions, but were still able to produce flashes of excellent attacking rugby to claim a 32-12 win over Argentina.
Playing in just his second Test match, Fassi reproduced his debut heroics as he latched onto an Elton Jantjies cross-field kick after initially juggling the ball and showed a clean pair of heels to get away from the cover defence. Fassi did very well to tiptoe and stay in the field of play despite the attentions of an Argentinian defender and score one of the Boks’ three tries in the match.
Nominee 6: Damian de Allende vs New Zealand
Coming off back-to-back losses to Australia and a narrow defeat to New Zealand, the Boks were desperate for a bit of magic in the 101st Test against the All Blacks.
The Springboks looked fired up from the start and after a dramatic finale, finished the Rugby Championship on a high as Elton Jantjies nailed an 82nd-minute penalty for a 31-29 victory.
The try that started it all was sparked by a bit of magic from centres Lukhanyo Am and Damian de Allende. The All Blacks were in possession just outside their own 22 and, spotting a bit of space on the outside, decided to try and launch an attack from deep. However, All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor fumbled the pass and Am pounced, gathering the ball and then producing an outrageous behind-the-back offload to Sbu Nkosi, who drew Jordie Barrett in before passing to De Allende to finish.
