There was not a moment in the year more magical than watching Morne Steyn go full circle in his Springbok career, kicking South Africa to victory over the British & Irish Lions in the decisive final Test, writes OLIVER KEOHANE.
Within minutes of running on to the field in the deciding Test, Steyn didn’t hesitate to call for the tee before kicking the Springboks to 16-13 in the final quarter.
The veteran goal-kicking ace then booted the Boks into a 19-16 lead with a minute to play and, in keeping with the moment, he was the one who put the ball into the empty stands of Cape Town Stadium to win the series for the South Africa, as he had done in Pretoria 12 years earlier when the Boks, through Steyn’s last kick of the second Test, won the 2009 series.
In 2009, Morne Steyn was a South African hero when he kicked the Springboks to victory in Pretoria in what was only his second Test appearance. And on 7 August 2021, Steyn was as magical in Cape Town in calmly doing exactly what he was picked to do.
What. A. Story.
