Blitzboks see off GB to progress to playoffs unbeaten

The Blitzboks claimed a 21-7 victory over Great Britain in their final Pool A match on Friday evening to finish unbeaten on day one of the second Sevens Series tournament in Dubai.

By so doing, the Blitzboks not only stretched their current unbeaten run to 21 matches, but also progressed to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Neil Powell’s team will tackle Kenya on Saturday morning (8.50am).

The Blitzboks took a 14-7 lead into the break against Great Britain, thanks to tries by Zain Davids and Shilton van Wyk. Alex Davis went over the whitewash just before the break to reduce the deficit to seven points.

The second half was an intense and tightly-contested affair, but the Britons made things difficult for themselves by having two players yellow-carded.

It was Ronald Brown who showed great pace and fast feet to burst through the defence and score the decisive try, which sealed the win and top spot in Pool A.

Earlier in the day, the Blitzboks scored eight tries in their 48-0 victory over Japan. All eight tries were scored by a different player.

In the second match against Ireland, Van Wyk, Selvyn Davids and Impi Visser scored to seal a 21-12 win.
