Heartfelt messages of support and condolences have poured in from the rugby world to Jannie du Plessis and his family after the passing of his infant son on Tuesday.
Former Springbok prop Toks van der Linde shared the news on social media that Du Plessis’ one-year-old son had passed away in a drowning accident. The tragedy occurred on Du Plessis’ 39th birthday.
Van der Linde asked for prayers for the Du Plessis family.

The Lions issued a statement on the matter on Wednesday:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Jannie and Ronel’s loss. Our heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time. As it’s a private matter, we will allow Jannie and his family the respect and space for now as they come to terms with their loss.”
The Sharks, with whom Du Plessis spent a significant portion of his rugby career, also issued a statement on social media.
“The Sharks extend our deepest condolences to Jannie, Ronel and the entire Du Plessis family on the tragic loss of his young son. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.”
Du Plessis’ former Springbok and Sharks teammate Tendai Mtawarira said his heart was broken by the news.
