Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn has retired from Test rugby a few months after his heroics in the 2021 British & Irish Lions series.
Steyn confirmed the news to SuperSport.com, having made the decision after returning from the away leg of the Rugby Championship in Australia.
The 37-year-old has decided to spend more time with his family and will not be available for the November tour of the United Kingdom.
Steyn made a memorable return to the Springbok squad during the Lions series, kicking the series-winning penalty in the third and final Test, a near repeat of his efforts in 2009.
“It’s a good time to make this decision,” Steyn told SuperSport.com. “I think it’s time to call it a day now.
“I’ve had a lot of time to think about this and it has been difficult over the last few months being away from home with touring and being away from my kids.”
Steyn finishes his Test career as one of South Africa’s most successful flyhalves, having won two series against the British & Irish Lions and a Tri-Nations title, setting several records along the way.
He will continue to play for the Bulls and is reportedly in talks over a contract extension, with his current deal coming to an end in June 2022.
The Bulls are currently without star signing Johan Goosen, who will be out until the next Vodacom United Rugby Championship season after damaging a knee ligament.
