As the South African teams prepare to complete the opening four-match tour of the inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship, which player has made the most of the opportunity?

The Lions, Sharks, Stormers and Vodacom Bulls took a couple of rounds to adjust to the new competition, but all bounced back in the third round to deliver solid performances.

The Sharks and Bulls tasted their first wins, against Ospreys and Cardiff, respectively, while the Stormers were able to hold Edinburgh to a draw.

The matches on Friday and Saturday will present domestic players with a final opportunity to impress the Springbok coaches before their squad is named for South Africa’s end-of-year tour.

Even though the expanded competition is only three rounds old, there have been a number of excellent performers who have put their hand up for selection.

Captain Marcell Coetzee and No 8 Elrigh Louw have both shone in the Bulls pack, playing a crucial role in the win over Cardiff.

Phepsi Buthelezi has shown composure beyond his youth in captaining the Sharks, while Boeta Chamberlain has taken the opportunity to shine at flyhalf, nailing three drop goals against Ospreys.

For the Stormers, Evan Roos has carried his sensational Currie Cup form into the URC and currently ranks fourth for defenders beaten. Fullback Warrick Gelant has made an excellent return from injury and looked close to his best against Edinburgh.

Before suffering an ankle injury that will keep him out for three months, Jordan Hendrikse was solid for the Lions at No 10, converting all six of his shots at goal. Rabz Maxwane is another with experience of playing in the UK, having represented the Cheetahs in the PRO14, and he scored a brace in the Lions’ win over Zebre.
