The inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship is on our doorstep, as a new dawn commences for South African franchise rugby, having opted out of Super Rugby as the premier club competition following an acrimonious fall out between South African and New Zealand administrators in the aftermath of Covid-related disruptions to the 2020 season.
The tournament comprises of 16 teams – South African teams: Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers; Irish teams: Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster; Italian teams: Benetton and Zebre; Scottish teams: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors; and Welsh teams: Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets.
For eight months (24 September – 21 May) rugby fans can enjoy this exciting new competition over most weekends, including over the festive holidays in December. However, locals will have to be patient before they can catch a glimpse of their heroes on home soil, as the Stormers take on Zebre; Sharks host Scarlets; Bulls encounter Munster; and the Lions battle Cardiff on the weekend of 27/28 November in South Africa.
However, fans do not have to wait all that time before they can back their favourite team and make it worth it, while adding a layer of excitement to how they experience the competition. From the comfort and convenience of their couch, fans can bet on any match before kickoff (Pre-Match) or during (Live In-Play) by simply signing up to a legal, safe and secure online betting platform such as Millionaires Gaming Sports Betting– where they claim not one but TWO Welcome Bonuses up to R3000 on their first AND second deposits!
One of the more popular rugby betting markets is Handicap betting. As there are often mismatches between opponents and the winner is easy to predict, leading to a low price (odds) on the favourites, handicaps are a way to level the playing between outright favourites and under-dogs and give better value to the customers. Example: South Africa v Namibia. The Boks would be expected to win this clash easily and therefore a customer would be unlikely to get a price to bet on this outcome. However, if the Boks were given a handicap of -50.5 and Namibia +50.5, the Boks would need to win by more than 50 points for bet to be won, if placed on a Bok win.
