A vote of no confidence against Western Province Rugby Football Union president Zelt Marais did not take place as Monday night’s meeting reportedly fell apart.

Marais was set to face a vote of no confidence on the evening of 20 September as he has come under fire for disobeying and acting in direct conflict with the instructions of the joint WPRFU and SA Rugby advisory committee.

However, according to a report on Rugby365.com, the vote did not take place on Monday as there were arguments over technicalities.

Marais reportedly refused to leave the meeting and demanded that clubs showed him the minutes of the meeting where they decided to hold a vote of no confidence. Marais further apparently threatened to place clubs into administration.

According to the report, the chaos at the meeting got to the point that club representatives started walking out.

The failed no-confidence meeting is the latest blow for the WP boardroom.

Last Friday, Peter Jooste became the latest executive committee member to step down from his position, following other high-profile members such as Kevin Kiewitz and Spencer King.

This past Saturday, Western Province Professional Rugby chairperson Ebrahim Rasool published an open letter in which he criticised the “megalomania” that has defined Marais’ tenure.
