Cheslin Kolbe’s brilliant try in the third Test against the British & Irish Lions was voted as the most-enjoyed moment from the series.
Following the B&I Lions eight-match tour of South Africa, including the Springboks’ 2-1 Test series win over the visitors, SARugbymag.co.za gave readers the option to pick the single moment they enjoyed most.
There were many highs and lows throughout this tour.
The Lions won all four of their matches against the provincial sides (the Lions, Sharks x2, and Stormers), while they lost to South Africa A, the official Bok team in all but name.
The stakes were higher by the time the Test series rolled by, making the highlights all that more enjoyable.
The tourists won the first Test 22-17 and dominated the first half of the second Test before the Boks produced a powerful second-half display to win 27-9 and level the series at 1-1 heading into the third Test.
The deciding third Test was closely contested, but Morne Steyn ultimately stepped up to knock over the series-winning penalty some 12 years after he had also kicked South Africa to a famous series win over the Lions.
Among some of the major highlights throughout the tour was Steyn’s comeback to slot the decisive penalty, 12 years after he did the same in 2009. Then, Lukhanyo Am’s massive tackle on Lions centre Elliot Daly, Siya Kolisi’s captaincy and his excellent second Test performance, and the growth of Franco Mostert and Trevor Nyakane during the series also ranked high.
However, it was Kolbe’s excellent finish in the third Test that ultimated ranked as the readers’ favourite moment. After receiving the ball on the counter-attack from Willie le Roux, Kolbe beat both Liam Williams and Luke Cowan-Dickie to score a try similar to his effort against England in the 2019 World Cup final.
