SARugbymag.co.za chats to Westville Boys' 1st XV coach Torsten-Erik Sorensen about the upcoming season
How many of last year’s 1st XV players are still in the squad?
Seven.
What has been your main focus in preparing for this season?
We follow our standard Periodisation Programme focusing on all key areas from conditioning to position specific skills development. The only improvement we have made is in the area of EQ, emotional intelligence, which we believe has an important role to play in the areas of discipline, focus and team-building.
Who are the key players in your squad?
Kyan Braithwaite, our flyhalf. Our captain-elect, Jordan Martin [lock], has unfortunately suffered a torn MCL and is in rehab. If he returns, it will be a massive boost for the team.
Who will be the toughest opposition this year?
Every game is crucial and there are no easy fixtures at this level, but if I had to pick one it would have to be Grey Bloem, based on their pedigree.
What lessons have you learned from last season?
Never underestimate the importance of a team that is united and focused on achieving their goals. Being 100% accurate in execution is paramount: 95% means you are giving your opposition a 5% chance and often that is all good teams need.
What are your goals for the 2014 season?
To play an attractive, effective brand of rugby that complements our strengths. To continue building on the legacy created by those teams who have gone before.
