There are some interesting leaders after the opening weekend of Vodacom Super Rugby, along with a few familiar familiar faces.
The Lions' upset win over the Cheetahs provided a surprising start to the 2014 Fantasy Super Rugby, with just 5% of managers selecting star performer Marnitz Boshoff. The Lions flyhalf kicked his way to a high score of 36 points for the round, making him the top kicker choice.
Captain of the round was Willie le Roux, who gave 62% of managers a welcome boost, despite the Cheetahs’ loss. Le Roux had a standout performance with two assists and the six-point performance bonus for his 105m run, three turnovers and three defenders beaten.
With just four teams playing and three players allowed per team, the best 12 player squad that was possible in round one is as follows:
Marnitz Boshoff (Lions, flyhalf) – 36pts
Willie le Roux (Cheetahs, outside back) – 24pts
Paul Jordaan (Sharks, centre) – 22pts
Odwa Ndungane (Sharks, outside back) – 22pts
Cobus Reinach (Sharks, scrumhalf) – 22pts
Cornal Hendricks (Cheetahs, outside back) – 20pts
Jono Ross (Bulls, loose forward) – 18pts
Derick Minnie (Lions, loose forward) –16pts
Franco van der Merwe (Lions, lock) –12pts
Jacques du Plessis (Bulls, loose forward) – 10pts
Flip van der Merwe (Bulls, lock) – 10pts
Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs, front row) – 6pts
This team would have yielded a total of 242 points. The round winner, Magdelena Jonker, came close to this with 226. Check out the winning team here.
