Jake White says playing the forthcoming South African domestic competition over the festive season could offer a unique experience that appeals to fans.

Following the cancellation of Vodacom Super Rugby due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing government restrictions, South African teams have not played since March.

But a local domestic competition is set to kick off on 10 October and will run until January.

In an interview shared on the Bulls’ mobile app, the team’s director of rugby and head coach says the lockdown period and the timing of the new competition could see an influx of supporters at Loftus and other stadiums around the country.

‘I just hope that when we return, people will be so “lus” to come and watch us play and “lus” to watch live rugby again in this rugby town, that the people will return to Loftus,’ White said.

‘It is wonderful to play over Christmas and New Year,’ he added. ‘When I coached in France they played on New Year’s Day and Boxing Day.

‘It is new for South African supporters, but it is wonderful. Imagine having a Christmas lunch and then getting up on Boxing Day to watch rugby.

‘It will be wonderful for the supporters to watch live rugby on 2 January as well.’

White explained that the playing conditions will be different to what the Super Rugby players are used to, but he believes they will adapt.

‘Having also played in other competitions around the world, you have to adapt to the conditions.

‘It could be nice quick-paced games, nice hard field and nice sunshine. Hopefully we will also see some exciting rugby.’
